Wei Dai

With a Phd. in Literature and extensive study in Guqin, Ms. Dai is an internationally recognized performer and scholar specializing in several musical styles of traditional Guqin schools.
Ms. Dai holds the title of Associate Professor and Chair of the teaching-research section of Chinese Music History, Department of Musicology at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She was also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Guqin in the Department of National Instrumental Music, holding the title of Dawn Scholar issued by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and the Pujiang Talent Artist issued by Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality. Ms. Dai is a Council Member of The Chinese Music History Association and Chinese Kunju & Guqin Research Association, The Shanghai Film Artist Association, Shanghai Musician Association, Guqin Professional Committee of China Nationalities Orchestra Society, and Jin Yu Qin Society and a Life Member of International Traditional Music Society (ICTM). She has also had the honor of serving as the Guqin judge of the 33th and 35th Macao Young Musicians Competitions, and the Chinese Instruments judge of the 25th United States International Music Competition.
As a guest speaker, performer and visiting scholar in the US and Canada, she has held many personal Guqin concerts and lectures throughout North America and China. Most notably, critically acclaimed solo Guqin concerts in Los Angeles and Shanghai. Not only a successful performing artist and scholar, she also successfully organized The 2006 International Guqin Symposium in Shanghai, Lecture Series of Guqin at Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2015, the 70th and 80th Anniversary Celebration of Jin Yu Qin Society in 2006/2016 and in 2017 was invited to participate in shooting the documentary Guqin Heart Rhyme of Oriental TV's column Big Love Oriental, which attracted the attention of the majority of Guqin music lovers.
A well published scholar her book include: A Brief History of Chinese Music Culture, Successors, Schools and Scores of Qin: the Study of Historical Evolution and Artistic Style of Guang Ling Qin School, and her articles: Study on Notation Versions of Qin Piece ‘Jie Shi Tune. You Lan, Rise, Development and Evolution of Zhe School of Guqin, History Pursuit of Shao Xing Qin School, and An Examination of the Historical Materials of Female Qin Players in Ming Dynasty with the study of selected issues. As a recording artist, her solo CDs include: Guinness and The Trilogy of Yang Guan are indicative of what the reviewers cite as “...very natural and highly expressive.”
